Hello!! In general, this class has kept my interest the entire semester. I would have to consider Sport and Gender one of my favorite classes because we talk about a number of subjects I've never thought about. I also enjoyed how the class had very intriguing discussions and that everybody was involved. Seeing everybody interact with one another made the class a bit more fun, in my opinion. I also liked how we got into groups and did little projects like the search in the bodybuilding magazines. Those were creative ways of getting students participating and actually having a bit of fun instead of plain lectures.
There were many topics that I enjoyed listening and learning about. One of the interesting topics to me was that people tend to think in binary ways once it comes to events in life. There have been a number of athletes that we discussed that were born inter-sexed. People aren't always born either male or female. Unfortunately, some people are born with both sex parts and some people may like both sexes. Just because a individual is different, they should still have the rights of playing sports as any other athlete. Another topic that stood out to me was, handicapped sports. I felt like this was interesting because I never thought about people with disabilities playing sports. It was sad to hear their individual stories and how they got into freak accidents. But it was nice to know that they still had hope and continued to play sports, regardless of their disability.
Writing Blogs! Writing in these blogs was a bit of a new experience for me. In the past, all the classes I've had, none of my teachers ever made a blog or journal entry a necessity for their students. I feel like things are a way to earn some points without a lot of effort. I personally like writing the blogs and comments. I think its quite interesting to see how one of my fellow colleagues feel about a certain topic. I think keeping a blog is a great way for everybody to interact with each and inform others about information.
To sum everything up, I LOVE this class! There are so many topics that this class covers that you would never think about. This class surprisingly kept my attention the whole semester. I loved the fact that this was a discussion-based class, filled with interactive people. I would definitely encourage my friends to take this class. I'm actually a bit disappointed because I feel as though I wont have another class like this in my last few semesters here at BG. Really enjoyed having Dr. Spencer as the professor as well. Hopefully she's teaching another class because I would definitely sign up for it! :)

Hi Angel!
ReplyDeleteNice post! I loved this class as well, I really enjoyed discussing about handicapped athletes as well. When we did the in class assignment on writing down how many handicapped athletes you knew, sadly the only one I knew was Oscar Pistororis and the female that lost her arm surfing, I cant think of her name lol. Also, when Dr. Spencer asked if we thought we would still participate in sports if we were handicapped, I didn't know how to answer that. It is such a blessing that I was born with both arms and legs and was able to participate in sports at such a young age. But at any given moment that can all change, especially with the "freak accidents" like you mentioned. I also liked talking about the inter-sex athletes! I never had thought of sport in that way before so it was cool hearing and learning new things. I also liked how everyone discussed topics as a group and we always had input about different discussions and everyone worked together. Everyone got along and their was never anything "too negative" being said. Overall, I am sad that this class is over and I am glad I had Dr. Spencer as a professor as well. Good luck to you in school Angel!
