Cool Pose Exam Review

By: Jessica Gatten

Cool Pose is all about Black men and masculinity in the social aspect. Some see it as resistance to racism. The best example of racism resistance would be in the 1968 Olympics where Tommie Smith and John Carlos symbolically stood on the medal podium with their fist in the air. Although the Olympic protest was a stance of black masculinity cool pose can be seen in a different light also. Society now considers cool pose as the hip hop styles introduced into sports. Players like the fab five from the University of Michigan who introduced long baggy shorts into the game of basketball. According the readings “less than 6% of all athletic scholarships given in the United States go to blacks” (Majors pg. 3); which is shocking  considering how many student athletes are black. In 2013 race should not be a factor in giving out scholarships. Cool pose may still be in affect with the total number of trends that come out each month but it’s something that everybody does now and doesn’t have much to do with race. Race is not something that is controversial as much anymore compared to gender and sexuality disputes however there is still a lack of black athletes in sports such as swimming, hockey, golf, and auto racing; the reason of why black athletes are missing in these sports is not obvious but could most likely be associated with the cultural of sports they are brought up watching and playing. When someone’s parents and family watch a sport all their life the individual regardless of race, gender, or age they will most likely be interested in the same sport.
