LeBron on Oprah

By: Matt Goryance

I think the last class we had right before spring break when we were discussing LeBron raised some good points and is perfect for this blog post because as it says in the blog guidelines, I now think about something differently as a result of our class and discussion. I am a huge Cleveland fan, they are the only professional sports teams I really care about and I was pissed and hated LeBron for a while because he decided to leave Cleveland and because of how he chose to leave. I still feel like part of me will never like him again but after watching him talk about it on Oprah I feel like he seemed sincere and sorry for the things he did and the way he left Cleveland. I think LeBron has matured a lot since “The Decision” and maybe its time for everyone to bury the hatchet. I think LeBron has been through a lot since then with all the hatred he’s seen from Cleveland and the stain he’s put on his career. As we saw from our class discussion the words we put on the board to describe him weren’t exactly complementary and he’s never going to be the MJ who took the Bulls to the finals and never lost.

I’m sure LeBron and Dan Gilbert both wish they could take some of their actions back but LeBron was young and was just doing what he wanted to do without thinking of the best way to do it and Dan Gilbert was just upset and drunk and was only trying to keep the loyal fans of Cleveland on his side. Kyrie has helped Cleveland basketball a ton and I think we all enjoy watching him play very much. When it comes to the issue of LeBron coming back to Cleveland I think it would be the best thing for the Cavs in the way of winning a championship but at the same time the jerseys are already burned and I don’t know if you can heal those scars. It would be interesting to see how Lebron and Dan Gilbert would handle such a situation

  1. Hey Matt, before I came to the United States, I was already a basketball fan but I did not have a favorite team in particular. I looked up to players like MJ, Kobe, LeBron, and so on. I totally agree with you about LeBron maturing a lot since he made the decision. When LeBron made his decision to Miami, it wasn’t a big deal from my point of view because I did not have the relationship with Cleveland like how people around this area do. It was just another player moving to a new team to me. When I got the BGSU, I was shocked to see how much people despise LeBron. Being loyal to the Cavs was one thing but LeBron, like any other NBA players wants to win championships and Cleveland did not have players that could help him achieve that goal. I think his decision to move was the right decision for him. He did not move for the money, he did it for basketball. Besides that, what Dan Gilbert did to LeBron was very immature. Gilbert, as the owner should not blew up and brunt LeBron’s jersey. He should have kept his cool, LeBron made his decision and there was nothing Gilbert could do to change that at that moment. As much as rumors spreading about LeBron returning to the Cavs, I don’t think he would.

  2. There are probably a few people in Cleveland who still have their Lebron jerseys (I did not burn mine, for what it's worth:-) But, being a long-time Cleveland fan, I have to say that I'll believe it when I see it. I agree with you Matt when you say it is fun to watch Kyrie. I just hope he isn't plagued by injuries!

I really hope that one day we can see the Lebron Resurrection in a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform. Even though like you said he left on some bad terms with Dan Gilbert and the city of Cleveland, there is no doubt in my mind that everyone would welcome him back. Especially since the establishment of Kyrie Irving as the face of the franchise, Lebron would only help him and make the team better. I think that it would be one of the greatest sports stories of all time if Lebron decided to do so. The city of Cleveland would put the Lebron witness poster back up on the side of the building and Cleveland would have their first championship in a long long time. I know that I personally would love to see Lebron back in Cleveland and I think that it would be a great thing for the NBA. However, I feel that because Lebron has migrated his way to South Beach he will never truly want to return to the crappy Ohio climate and the crappy exposure that he gets in Cleveland compared to in Miami. Although I know a lot of people including myself want this to happen, it sucks to say that this is merely a fantasy and will almost surely never be a reality.

I really don't think that LeBron will ever return to Cleveland. 100% of that blame lies on Dan Gilbert. And I would never blame him for not going back. Inside I think he really does miss Ohio. These are his fans and this is his home and I don't think Miami is all that he thought it was going to be. It sucks to see Cleveland fans so bitter and hung up on something that happened three years ago, which is why it is a good thing that Kyrie Irving has come along. Kyrie by no stretch of imagination is LeBron James, but he is a budding superstar and will suffice if LeBron doesn't make the trip back to Cleveland. I would love to see the King return back to his hometown, but I really don't think it's going to happen, and he probably would be smart to stay out because of how many bridges he has burned that are unreplaceable.
