Who is Sam Gordon?!? …Well,
Sam Gordon is a nine year old football sensation. Sam is different from your
normal peewee football player for the fact that Sam is actually short for
Samantha. Gordon gained and attracted many fans and the eyes of high profile
NFL individuals for the fact that she was dominating her Salt Lake City youth
league consisting of all boys. Her speed and agility was at a completely
different level than that of her male peers. She was made a huge sensation from
a reel of her being put on Youtube. Below is a clip of her highlight tape on
Youtube.
As she began to gain
mass popularity, Sam Gordon was granted the opportunity to become the first
female football player to grace the cover of the Wheaties cereal box. NFL commissioner,
Roger Goodell actually invited Sam to attend the Super Bowl with him. Her
favorite sport is soccer and she hopes to someday play in the World Cup and
represent the U.S. to the fullest. Gordon has gained mass notoriety and fame
from the youtube clips. She has appeared on Goodmorning America as well as ESPN’s
Sportscenter.
Sam
Gordon’s story is a prime example showcasing the fact that women CAN compete
with males in athletics. She has been doing more than just competing, she has
been destroying her competition on the field and has extended her talent way
further than her teammates and peers. Given the fact that as she gets older,
her male counterparts will grow bigger and stronger, she is still not to be
taken lightly. There is no telling if her male counterparts will still be able
to keep up with her speed.
Sam
is a great example for females and is setting a new standard. She is a great
inspiration to all girls and women. Girls can play any sport that they want no
matter the physicality and should not at all be held back from doing so. I,
myself played basketball my whole life and was better than many guys that I played
against. I was also faster and a better long jumper than the guys at my school.
Being a girl should not be a determining factor in your athletic ability.
Excluding
girls from certain sports is a form of discrimination and should not be
tolerated at all; furthermore, I will not tolerate it myself. Girls can do any
sport that a guy can do, and in some cases do them better!

First I wanted to say this was a great blog entry. With that being said, I personally think that Sam Gordon is an amazing young woman with an extraordinary gift. Her ability to move so agilely and break away from defenders is jaw-dropping. I know many of these kids are still very young and will eventually grow up and get better, but still, to see her with all of this talent at such a young age is so remarkable. I can only imagine how proud and happy her parents must be for her and the way she is destroying the boys. I know when I was growing up, I used to play in a summer baseball league and every year there would be this one girl who would always play against us. She was mainly a pitcher and I thought it was kind of ironic because many people didn’t want her playing in the league because they thought she wasn’t good enough. But she was one of the best players in the league and she was always one of the leading pitchers in strikeouts and era (earned run average). I always knew when I was going to play there team that I had to always prepare correctly or she would make a fool out of me like she did to so many other players. Just like in the case of Sam Gordon, this girl is just another example of the women that play in men’s leagues and dominate them.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very good entry. When I read it I agree, but disagree at the same time. I do believe that girls most certainly can compete with boys. As we saw in the video in class, this girl was on another planet from the boys that she was playing against. However, as kids get older, boys advance physically more than girls MOST of the time, not always. I think that sports should be co-ed, but only until a certain age. It would be the most fair and right thing if men and women could always play in sports together no matter what age they are, but in my eyes, at a certain age, it is hard for women to compete in high level contact sports like football. I love that she is doing so well and making the boys look bad, and she will probably keep it up for a while. But eventually, they will most likely catch up and pass her. MAYBE not, but I think that is a good thing that many girls stop playing sports like football at a certain age because to me, there is a difference is physical strength that could result in injuries.
Hey Janelle, there is not question that this girl has talent! I don’t know whether there will ever be a female football league in the future for Sam to be in but there is no doubt she will become a tremendous athlete. She makes it look so easy when she put her fellow competitors in the dust. I am really happy that people are supporting this young girl in so many ways. Appearing on TV shows, being on the cover of Wheaties cereal box and many more. I agree that girls can compete with male athletics. I believe that if a female athlete qualifies to be in a male team, she deserves it and should be in the team. The best thing to do now is try to open new sports like soccer and she might like it. She has a great potential turning pro in the future and hopefully represent her country.

I agree that it's a great story how well Sam Gordon has played in her all male league. Hopefully she continues playing and continues to have the great success she has had so far. She said her favorite sport is soccer so it'll be interesting to see whether she sticks with football or switches to soccer when she gets to high school and most of the boys have started to grow bigger and stronger than her. Maybe she could play both sports, I'm sure she would excel on the soccer field with her speed and acceleration and as we've seen from the above video, as long as she keeps that speed she can be tremendously successful football player.
